Whether you have an hour a month to volunteer, or you are interested in working more than once a week, the Southern Tier Chapter has a variety of opportunities available to suit your schedule.
Direct Client Assistance
Disaster Action Team (DAT) Volunteer
DAT volunteers respond to local disasters (fires, floods, storms, etc.) and meet the immediate needs of disaster victims. Assistance includes food, clothing and shelter. There are several specialized positions available, including client case work, shelter operations, mental health services, health services, logistics, mass care and more. Additionally, DAT volunteers have the option of becoming national volunteers who are deployed for 2 - 3 week assignments when major disasters strike in the United States. Classroom training required. Skills required: ability to listen, be empathetic, communicate well and ability to work independently. Level of commitment: as needed.

Service to Armed Forces (SAF) Volunteer
SAF volunteers provide an important link between military personnel and their families. Level of commitment: on call once per week.
Registration Coordinator
Registrator coordinators welcome blood donors, manage the appointment schedule, monitor donor flow and complete the hourly donor flow sheet. Level of commitment: once per month to more than once per week.
Canteen Coordinator
Observes donors for adverse reactions and notifies paid staff of any concerns. In addition, this position maintains refreshments and provides recognition pins, signs donor card, re-signs and promotions program. Level of commitment: once per week.
Telerecruitment
Telerecruiters contact previous blood donors to schedule appointments at upcoming blood drives. Level of commitment: one week, bi-monthly.
Shopper Program (Broome County)
Shopper volunteers provide grocery shopping services for homebound elderly. The client provides a grocery list and payment. The volunteer may also assist with putting groceries away. Additionally, the volunteer may run errands to the pharmacy, bank, post office, etc. Level of commitment: bi-weekly to weekly.
Education and Preparedness
Youth Services
Assist in a variety of youth programs such as Red Cross Clubs, Scout Preparedness Patch workshops, Halloween Safety presentations, Home Alone Safety classes, Babysitter's Training courses and other preparedness programs designed for youth. Level of commitment: bi-monthly to bi-weekly.

Instructor
Teaches CPR, first aid, AED and other health related courses to the community. Classroom training required. Level of commitment: monthly or weekly.
Instructor Aid
Instructor aids assist the instructor in teaching CPR, AED, First Aid and other related health courses to the community. Classroom training required. Level of commitment: monthly to weekly.
Community Education Presenter
Community Education presenters educate the community about disasters, health tips, preparedness and Red Cross programs. Level of commitment: bi-monthly to monthly.
Support and Fund Development

Community Event Volunteer
Community event volunteers provide information about the Red Cross at public events. Level of commitment: bimonthly.
Office Assistant
Office assistants help with mailings, filing, data entry or other office tasks. Level of commitment: as needed.
Receptionist
The receptionist greets walk-in clients and operates the switchboard. Level of commitment: biweekly to weekly.
Special Events Volunteer
Special events volunteers work on the development, coordination and staffing of special events. Level of commitment: monthly.
Public Relations Volunteer
Public relations volunteers assist PR staff with newsletter production, press release writing and general PR duties. Level of commitment: monthly.
