If your energy bills are more than you can handle, Project SHARE may be able to help.
New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) and the American Red Cross have established this program to provide financial assistance to persons over 60 years of age, persons with disabilities, or those with serious medical conditions who need help to pay for energy expenses.
Project SHARE is funded by NYSEG shareholders, its employees and customers and is administered by the American Red Cross.
How can Project SHARE help?
Project SHARE can help pay bills for oil, natural gas, electricity, propane, or wood. It may also help you pay for repairs to heating equipment, water heaters, broken windows and storm doors.
How do I qualify?
To qualify for Project SHARE, you must:
- have an energy-related emergency
- be a NYSEG customer or live in NYSEG's service area
You must also be:
- age 60 or older OR
- disabled, regardless of age OR
- have a serious medical problem which is aggravated by the energy emergency, regardless of age
Special note: Before you can qualify for Project SHARE, you must first apply for HEAP (Home Energency Assistance Program) from the Department of Social Services or Office for the Aging. If you have already received this grant, or if you were denied or not eligible for HEAP or other social services assistance, you may qualify for Project SHARE.
How does Project SHARE pay?
- Project SHARE recipients usually receive a grant of up to $300.
- The American Red Cross will send the Project SHARE grant directly to your vendor.
- Grants may be received only once in an 18-month period.
