The updated Water Safety Instructor (WSI) course features new concepts and shortened training time of approximately 30 hours. Candidates must be at least 16 years old to enter the course. Through video and hands-on skill building, the course features clearly described and applied teaching strategies, including explanation-demonstration-practice, task setting, station teaching and guided discovery.

A new manual provides instructors with the tools and information they need to plan and conduct courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program, including Parent and Child Aquatics, Learn-to-Swim and water safety presentations. The manual explains motor learning principles, directions for course planning and detailed teaching progressions with convenient cross-references, and is packaged with a CD-ROM of instructor resources, including a library of teaching activities, games and drills, and video clips of strokes which WSIs can view for future reference.

A new 85-minute Teaching Swimming and Water Safety video is also available to help Water Safety Instructor candidates develop their "photographic eye" and provide corrective feedback to swim skill development. The video includes content for Parent and Child Aquatics.
