AmeriCorps VISTA Member
VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is an AmeriCorps project run by the Corporation for National and Community Service. This program has been in existence since 1964 and works to achieve its mission: ".to strengthen and supplement efforts to eliminate and alleviate poverty. in the United States by encouraging and enabling persons from all walks of life.to perform meaningful and constructive volunteer service in agencies, institutions, and situations where the application of human talent and dedication may assist in the solution of poverty and poverty-related problems. to generated the commitment of private sector resources, to encourage volunteer service at the local level, and to strengthen local agencies and organizations to carry out the purpose of the program."

VISTA is a full-time, 12 month opportunity where members must fully commit to AmeriCorps service. VISTA members may not attend school or hold a job during this time period. In return for service, members are given a small living stipend and are offered benefits such as health insurance and child care. At the completion of their service, the members are given a choice of a cash stipend ($1,200) or an education award ($4,725).

Members develop and support Red Cross sponsored youth club, create and encourage civic engagement in K-12 and collegiate population, research and develop emergency preparedness materials for distribution and education purposes, provide community disaster education (CDE) to local community agencies; build partnerships within the community to ensure that there are support mechanisms in place for low-income community preparedness and response, recruit and mobilize volunteers and volunteer leaders, and resource and fund development to support program activities.
