April 20, 2009 - In 1974, President Richard Nixon established National Volunteer Week, which is sponsored by Points of Light Institute and HandsOn Network - the nation's largest volunteer organizing network. National Volunteer Week is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek ways to engage in their community. It's about meeting our challenges not as isolated individuals, but as members of a community, with all of us working together.
This year's theme is "Celebrating People in Action". What a fitting theme for the American Red Cross, Southern Tier Chapter. In 2008, 528 Chapter volunteers contributed more than 85,000 hours of service providing immediate relief to disaster victims, supporting the collection of life-saving blood at local drives throughout the region, shopping for the homebound elderly, providing timely emergency communication for military personnel and their families, teaching life saving classes, and educating the community in disaster preparedness.
On behalf of the American Red Cross, Southern Tier Chapter, we want to thank all volunteers for sharing their time, talent and heart. Without you, we could not provide the services we provide.
