The American Red Cross, Southern Tier Chapter is pleased to announce it was the recipient of a $1,458 grant to be used to purchase backpacks and school supplies for children of military families. 13 Local Fires in July!!!!

Endicott, NY (July 30, 2009) - "I couldn't breathe," exclaimed Amber McMahon. Ms. McMahon was spending the night at a cousin's house in Dryden when she received an early morning call informing her that the apartment house she lived in with her mother and brother was on fire. "Even though they told me that they were OK and being transported to the hospital, I went into instant panic mode," she said. Read more...

The direct financial costs for disaster assistance are already over $10,000 for July alone, continuing a blistering pace for disaster relief. "It seems too early for us to be making an emergency appeal for donations for disaster," said Cindy Gordineer CEO, "but we just closed out our fiscal year at a breakeven level and this pattern is highly unusual for a summer month. The costs for responding to disasters include direct relief and the operational support to make sure they can occur - stocked trailers, trained volunteers, equipment and vehicle operation, and staff costs too. Please consider making a donation to the local Red Cross today."

Disasters know no bounds. They affect young and old, strike at a moment's notice and affect individuals, families and even entire communities. April 20, 2009 - In 1974, President Richard Nixon established National Volunteer Week, which is sponsored by Points of Light Institute and HandsOn Network - the nation's largest volunteer organizing network. National Volunteer Week is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek ways to engage in their community. It's about meeting our challenges not as isolated individuals, but as members of a community, with all of us working together.

This year's theme is "Celebrating People in Action". What a fitting theme for the American Red Cross, Southern Tier Chapter. In 2008, 528 Chapter volunteers contributed more than 85,000 hours of service providing immediate relief to disaster victims, supporting the collection of life-saving blood at local drives throughout the region, shopping for the homebound elderly, providing timely emergency communication for military personnel and their families, teaching life saving classes, and educating the community in disaster preparedness.

On behalf of the American Red Cross, Southern Tier Chapter, we want to thank all volunteers for sharing their time, talent and heart. Without you, we could not provide the services we provide.
